A little introduction to Bed Turnings:
A "Bed Turning" is a way of introducing quilters and non-quilters to the beauty of antique or unique quilts in an interesting and different way. An old-fashioned “bed turning” was once a social event, offering ladies an opportunity to invite a few friends into their homes for a time of fellowship and turn the quilts (fold them over) and talk about the pattern, fabrics, the quilting of each. It also provided an opportunity to show off handmade quilts to their friends, to display handiwork. These quilts could tell stories about the past, if only they could talk. Perhaps one was lovingly stitched as a wedding gift. Another might have covered the bed of a grandchild. Fabric scraps may once have been part of a special dress, a feed sack, a necktie, or a curtain. Using knowledge acquired from years of experience, we can date some of these heirlooms using patchwork patterns, fabrics, stitches and the manner in which the quilt was put together as clues to the story of its creation. Quilting methods apparently vary in different areas of the state and country, giving us more clues into the tale they can tell!
Note: Members are welcomed to bring antique quilts for the display in the bed turning
A little information about quilt appraisals:
Why have a quilt appraised? A written appraisal can be beneficial to substantiate the value in case of theft, loss or damage of your contemporary or antique quilt. The appraiser can provide a Fair market value if you wish to sell or donate your quilt.
I can provide you with an approximate date for your vintage quilt and give you information on the care and repairs if recommended. Each appraisal takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, with photos taken. You can set up an appointment with Beth, for either Friday, September 23rd (between 1:00 and 4:00 pm or Saturday, September 24th between 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm). The fee is $45 (per quilt) Please contact her at: bethdan533@frontiernet.net or if you could fill out the information in the form and mail it to: Beth Davis/257 Wardell Rd./Rush, NY 14543
Beth Davis' Bio:
I've been a quiltmaker, lecturer, researcher, and collector of quilts for almost 30 years and I am a professional appraiser of quilted textiles, having studied textile identification, printed textile dating, and quilt history, construction, conservation, care, and repair. I’ve studied History of Quilts at the University of Nebraska. I interviewed Zylpha Suidara (known for her Fairy Tale appliqué quilts, who was the featured quilter here many years ago) for my thesis based on Oral History of quiltmakers, which has been published on the Alliance of American Quilts / Quilter's Save Our Stories website. I work at the Genesee Country Village Museum, where I was asked to write a book on the quilts in the exhibit that ran from 2004 to 2005. It is called 'Stitch in Time'. I was certified in 2006 by AQS (American Quilter's Society) after completed the appraiser courses and successfully passed the exams. I am a member of PAAQT (Professional Association of Appraisers - Quilted Textiles), which is a nonprofit organization comprised only of appraisers that have proven expertise in the area of quilts and related textiles.
