James Tissot -   Procession in the Temple

Welcome to Worship - Sunday April 5th, 2020

The Sixth Sunday in Lent - Palm Sunday

Opening Prayer:

Your sun canters past the gates of night
with such simple ease this day
bringing with her the beauty of the dawn
in her arms she radiates branches of peace.
In the glow of Your new day, O God,
awaken my mind to the energy of heaven all ‘round;
to see the gates You’ve opened for peace,
to hear creation call for calm,
to taste the time for temperament,
and to sing the song of salvation
your son composed amongst the crowd.
May this be so. Amen.

Entrance Hymn:
All Glory, Laud, and Honor

Refrain:
All glory, laud, and honor,
to thee, Redeemer, King,
to whom the lips of children
made sweet hosannas ring.

1.    Thou art the King of Israel,
thou David's royal Son,
who in the Lord's name comest,
the King and Blessed One. [Refrain]

2.    The company of angels
are praising thee on high,
and we with all creation
in chorus make reply. [Refrain]
3.    The people of the Hebrews
with palms before thee went;
our prayer and praise and anthems
before thee we present. [Refrain]

4.    To thee, before thy passion,
they sang their hymns of praise;
to thee, now high exalted,
our melody we raise. [Refrain]

5.    Thou didst accept their praises;
accept the prayers we bring,
who in all good delightest,
thou good and gracious King. [Refrain]

Prayer for Understanding

We cannot begin to understand
left speechless
scratching our heads
holding our hearts
mingling in our minds
wrestling and wrangling
angling for answers
with all that is before us
for all those with painful doubts
and justifiable ones at that
and so it seems
And yet you came as the true person
Jesus Christ
and you showed us how
to live the questions of life
faithfully
instead of being certain to death
that we can have all the answers
to life's most vexing questions of suffering
Jesus Christ
we join you in life of love
we join you in your Way of love
we join you in your Truth of love
and will ask for only enough understanding
to be present
aware
empathetic
so that your kingdom of peace
may rest, rule, and abide in us
in this present moment.
Amen.

Scripture Reading: John 12

The Lord's Prayer

Hymn: Tell Me the Stories of Jesus

1. Tell me the stories of Jesus I love to hear;
things I would ask him to tell me if he were here:
scenes by the wayside, tales of the sea,
stories of Jesus, tell them to me.

2.    First let me hear how the children stood round his knee,
and I shall fancy his blessing resting on me;
words full of kindness, deeds full of grace,
all in the lovelight of Jesus' face.
3.    Into the city I'd follow the children's band,
waving a branch of the palm tree high in my hand;
one of his heralds, yes, I would sing
loudest hosannas, "Jesus is King!"

Sermon: The Doors of True Triumph

Prayers of the People:

Joining Christ Jesus
we enter into the cacophony of the crowds
we hear cries for salvation and rescue
we bear the deep-seeded need for help
we sense the shouts for safety
we pause at the paucity of peace
Joining Christ Jesus
we shed a tear
and we groan
when we wonder whether Christ will find confidence on earth
Joining Christ Jesus
we pray for our friends
fellow learners in His Way
that we remain one
as He and You and the Comforter are One
we pray for the world
that He was sent to save
we pray for the sick, the hungry, the thirsty, the lonely
for whom He was called to care
Joining Christ Jesus
we enter into his gates of empathy this day
we commit to caring once more
we endeavor to empathize once more
we strive to suffer alongside of once more
so that we may be One
and Join Christ Jesus
in restoring the world to Love.
May this be so. Amen.

Just in today from Sue J.:
Prayers for my cousin, Maurisa. She's 36 years old, has two young children and has been diagnosed with Bells Palsy a few days ago.
Also prayers for Roxanne. She's 32, mother of two young children, and suffered a seizure this past week. Tests show a brain tumor and a biopsy will be done on Monday. She's in the hospital in Buffalo and due to Covid-19 no visitors are allowed...a very hard time for her and her family.

What are you thankful for?

Each week we would like to celebrate with one another for that which we are thankful. Send your video to Rev. Phil and he will upload it to the site. Let's share with each other!

Offering:

We are so collectively grateful for God's gifts that are given back for use in ministering to the lives within our community-at-large. Should you choose to prayerfully give, mailing to the UMC of North Chili 2200 Westside Dr. Rochester, NY 14624 would be received with gratitude and employed with prayerful stewardship.

Doxology:

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!
Amen.

Prayer of Dedication:

Refreshing and rejuvenating Giver of all gifts, we offer back to you a token of our gratitude for the life of this community. May they be used to inspire hearts and awaken minds to your love. Amen.

Recessional Hymn: Hosanna, Loud Hosanna

1.    Hosanna, loud hosanna,
the little children sang;
through pillared court and temple
the lovely anthem rang.
To Jesus, who had blessed them
close folded to his breast,
the children sang their praises,
the simplest and the best.

2.    From Olivet they followed
mid an exultant crowd,
the victor palm branch waving,
and chanting clear and loud.
The Lord of earth and heaven
rode on in lowly state,
nor scorned that little children
should on his bidding wait.
3.    "Hosanna in the highest!"
that ancient song we sing,
for Christ is our Redeemer,
the Lord of heaven our King.
O may we ever praise him
with heart and life and voice,
and in his blissful presence
eternally rejoice!
