James Tissot - The Woman of Samaria at the Well

Welcome to Worship - Sunday June 7th, 2020

1st Sunday After Pentecost

Opening Prayer:

Deeply distracted by our daily dailiness
Full of fear we fret the future
Acute accusations accost our long agos
But thanks be to You, our Savior
You meet us in in the thirst of our unawareness
and offer us the cool refreshing drink of enlightenment
a deep cleansing breath
a unexpectedly cold shower of insight
a fresh perspective beyond our ken
that awakens all our senses
we wonder in amazement
when we feel the weight of our worry
lift all at once from our very being
and we taste again
the marvelous gratitude for
love
life
loved ones in this life.
May we join with the woman at the well
and Jesus too
in this hour of worship in spirit and truth.
Amen.

Entrance Hymn:
How Can We Name A Love

1 How can we name a Love
that wakens heart and mind,
indwelling all we know
or think or do
or seek or find?
Within our daily world,
in every human face,
Love's echoes sound
and God is found,
hid in the commonplace.

2 If we awoke to life
built on a rock of care
that asked no great reward
but firm, assured,
was simply there,
we can, with parents' names,
describe, and thus adore,
Love unconfined,
a father kind,
a mother strong and sure.
3 When people share a task,
and strength and skills unite
in projects old or new,
to make or do
with shared delight,
our Friend and Partner's will
is better understood,
that all should share,
create, and care,
and know that life is good.

4 So in a hundred names,

each day we all can meet
a presence, sensed and shown
at work, at home,
or in the street.
Yet every name we see,
shines in a brighter sun:
In Christ alone
is Love full grown
and life and hope begun.

Please continue to send one another greetings of peace and joy throughout the week via mail, text, phone, etc.
Great job keeping in touch this week!

Prayer for Understanding:

Gracious God,
Like the beloved woman at the well
seeking water
we, too, desire the drink
which will slake our thirst
once and for all.
We believe that each breath
each moment when we are present
we can experience
the life-giving water
that is you.
Unveiled is your Way, Truth, and Life
now all we need
is for you to help us unveil our
eyes
ears
breath
spirit.
Amen.

The Lord's Prayer

Hymn: Be Still, My Soul

1 Be still, my soul: the Lord is on your side.
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
leave to your God to order and provide;
in every change God faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: your best, your heavenly friend
through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

2 Be still, my soul: your God will undertake
to guide the future, as in ages past.
Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake;
all now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
the Christ who ruled them while he dwelt below.

3 Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on
when we shall be forever with the Lord,
when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past,
all safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

Sermon: A New Orientation

Prayers of the People:

Seamstress of Seconds
and Midwife of every moment
Inventor of intimacy
and Lover of living
like embarrassed and heartbroken children
who have broken their favorite toy
playing too roughly
after you repeatedly warned us of the consequences
we stand before you
unable to look in your eyes
as we hand you
our broken world
shattered to pieces
unrecognizable
from its shiny first day
in our tiny hands
We're upset
with ourselves
with not being able to play with it anymore
We're sorry
We should have listened
We should have been gentler
We should have cared for it
at the level of our love for it
You lift our chin
and when our eyes meet yours
instead of judgment and scorn
Love is all that we see
in your tearful eyes that join with ours
"Can you fix it?" we ask
knowing we have no right to make such a request
And as you collect us into your embrace
You whisper
"of course I can, sweetheart... would you like to help?"
and with a love like yours
we feel it's possible
once again
to help rather than hurt
and so in between sobs
of sorrow for what has been
and joy for what may yet be
we whisper back,
"yes, I want to help."
May it be so.
Amen.

Hymn of Prayer: Let There Be Peace on Earth

Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me
Let There Be Peace on Earth
The peace that was meant to be
With God our Creator
children all are we
Let us walk with each other
In perfect harmony.
Let peace begin with me
Let this be the moment now.
With ev'ry step I take
Let this be my solemn vow
To take each moment and live
Each moment in peace eternally
Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.

Doxology:

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!
Amen.

Prayer of Dedication:

Water of Life, pour into us--our lives, our gifts, our words, and our actions.
gather up the moments of our days
sopping wet with opportunities of being grateful
and wring them out
soaking the fertile ground of the future
the very next becoming moment.
Amen.

Recessional Hymn: O Spirit of the Living God

1    O Spirit of the living God,
thou light and fire divine,
descend upon thy church once more,
and make it truly thine.
Fill it with love and joy and power,
with righteousness and peace;
till Christ shall dwell in human hearts,
and sin and sorrow cease.

2    Blow, wind of God! With wisdom blow
until our minds are free
from mists of error, clouds of doubt,
which blind our eyes to thee.
Burn, winged fire! Inspire our lips
with flaming love and zeal,
to preach to all thy great good news,
God's glorious commonweal.

3    Teach us to utter living words
of truth which all may hear,
the language all may understand
when love speaks loud and clear;
till every age and race and clime
shall blend their creeds in one,
and earth shall form one family
by whom thy will is done.

4    So shall we know the power of Christ
who came this world to save;
so shall we rise with him to life
which soars beyond the grave;
and earth shall win true holiness,
which makes thy children whole;
till, perfected by thee, we reach
creation's glorious goal!

Benediction:

May the Spirit of God
flow in and out of you.
May the Creation of God
grow and live in you.
May the Peace of God
gentle and grace you.
Now...
Now.
Amen.
