James Tissot - The Pool of Bethesda

Welcome to Worship - Sunday June 21st, 2020

3rd Sunday After Pentecost - Father's Day

Opening Prayer:

Holy Father,
remind us that we are your beloved children
this morning
we need your embrace that soothes our bruised being
and skinned soul
when we fall off the bike of life
that feels like just this morning
the training wheels came off
We're shaky and nervous
Hold onto us
Don't let go
as we try once again
to pedal with the confidence
of your grace
at our back.
We praise you this morning
for your promised presence
by our side.
Amen.

Entrance Hymn:
Lift Every Voice And Sing

1 Lift every voice and sing, till earth and heaven ring,
ring with the harmonies of liberty;
let our rejoicing rise high as the listening skies,
let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us;
sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
let us march on till victory is won.

2 Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod,
felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet
come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered;
we have come, treading our path thru the blood of the slaughtered,
out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last
where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.
3 God of our weary years, God of our silent tears,
thou who hast brought us thus far on the way;
thou who hast by thy might led us into the light,
keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee;
lest our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee;
shadowed beneath thy hand, may we forever stand,
true to our God, true to our native land.

Tonight - Chapter 5: Jesus and the Man at the Pool of Bethesda

Sundays and Tuesday Nights - 7:30PM
Meeting ID: 479 784 6800
Password: umcnc
Please continue to send one another greetings of peace and joy throughout the week via mail, text, phone, etc.
Great job keeping in touch this week!

Prayer for Understanding:

Gracious God,
Like the man at the pool
we often are unsure
we often fail to answer clearly
we often miss the mark of understanding
and yet we trust you
we trust your understanding
so we lean upon you
once again this morning
help us to accept how things are
in this present moment
with you
so that together
we may bring them to where they ought to be.
Amen.

Scripture Reading:
John 5

The Lord's Prayer

Hymn: We Are Climbing Jacob's Ladder

1 We are climbing Jacob’s ladder;
we are climbing Jacob’s ladder,
we are climbing Jacob’s ladder;
soldiers of the cross.
2 Every round goes higher, higher;
every round goes higher, higher,
every round goes higher, higher;
soldiers of the cross.
3 Sinner, do you love my Jesus?
Sinner, do you love my Jesus?
Sinner, do you love my Jesus?
Soldiers of the cross.
4 If you love him, why not serve him?
If you love him, why not serve him?
If you love him, why not serve him?
Soldiers of the cross.
5 We are climbing higher, higher;
we are climbing higher, higher,
we are climbing higher, higher;
soldiers of the cross.

Sermon: Do You Want to Be...?

Prayers of the People:

 Zephyr

     God of Surprises and Plot-twists
     Up-ending Creator of Momentous Moments
     You challenge us to look deeper into the pool of grace
     that our reflection may become more fully thine.
     You beckon us to listen closer to Creation’s Song
     that our refrain may harmonize with Your eternal melody.
     When to break forth and anoint?
     When to celebrate?
     When to save?
     When to feed?
     Human questions requiring divine answers -
     Spirit Wind of God -
     Like a Spring Zephyr brings news of sprouts and blossoms to the nostrils
     bring gospel truth to refresh and rejuvenate our souls.
     In our lonely moments, promise your presence again.
     In our joyous moments, persuade our hearts to praise.
     In our confused moments, comfort us with your grace.
     Sustain us so we may become sustenance.
     Anoint us that we may become blessings.
     Work in us that we may work with others.
     The Kingdom of Grace Extended,
     The Kingdom of Responsibility Accepted,
     The will of love’s call and response!
     “Thy Kingdom Come,
     Thy will be done.”
     Amen.

Hymn of Prayer: There Is A Balm in Gilead

Refrain:
There is a balm in Gilead
to make the wounded whole;
there is a balm in Gilead
to heal the sin-sick soul.

1 Some times I feel discouraged,
and think my work’s in vain.
But then the Holy Spirit
revives my soul again.
(Refrain)

2 Don't ever feel discouraged,
for Jesus is your friend,
and if you look for knowledge
he'll ne'er refuse to lend.
(Refrain)

3 If you can’t preach like Peter,
if you can’t pray like Paul,
just tell the love of Jesus,
and say he died for all.
(Refrain)

Offering:

We are so collectively grateful for God's gifts that are given back for use in ministering to the lives within our community-at-large. Should you choose to prayerfully give, mailing to the UMC of North Chili 2200 Westside Dr. Rochester, NY 14624 would be received with gratitude and employed with prayerful stewardship.

Doxology:

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!
Amen.

Prayer of Dedication:

Water of Life, pour into us--our lives, our gifts, our words, and our actions.
gather up the moments of our days
sopping wet with opportunities of being grateful
and wring them out
soaking the fertile ground of the future
the very next becoming moment.
Amen.

Recessional Hymn: God Hath Spoken by the Prophets

1 God hath spoken by the prophets,
spoken the unchanging Word,
each from age to age proclaiming,
God the One, the righteous Lord!
'Mid the world's despair and turmoil,
one firm anchor holdeth fast:
God eternal reigns forever,
God the first, and God the last.

2 God hath spoken by Christ Jesus,
Christ, the everlasting Son;
brightness of the Father's glory,
with the Father ever one;
spoken by the Word incarnate,
God of God, ere time was born;
Light of Light, to earth descending,
Christ, as God in human form.

3 God yet speaketh by the Spirit,
speaketh to our hearts again;
in the agelong Word expounding
God's own message, now as then.
Thru the rise and fall of nations,
one sure faith yet standing fast,
God abides, the Word unchanging,
God the first, and God the last.
God the first, and God the last.

Benediction:

May the Spirit of God
flow in and out of you.
May the Creation of God
grow and live in you.
May the Peace of God
gentle and grace you.
Now...
Now.
Amen.
